Semester 3 - Week 4

 

Today I was able to narrow down what exactly my project will be for this semester. I settled on using machine learning to predict economic inflation in the United States. The idea is to create an algorithm that will be trained with economic datasets from previous years and then test the algorithm with more recent data. From the small bit of research, I have done so far, economists are predicting inflation will drop later this year but in the last two years inflation has been at its worst since 1981. 

I wanted to do a more data science-related project since it is more aligned with my major. I also wanted to do an economic-based project since that's a field that needs data scientists and it pays well. I would like to do an internship related to business sometime during my undergrad just to see if it is the kind of industry I would like to work in. 

On a side note, I am doing more research on what I may want to do/study after I leave PC. I still plan on transferring to ASU West to continue TRAIN there but I don't know if I want to leave after getting my bachelor's or get a higher degree. I did see that ASU West has a minor in Applied Ethics which intrigues me but as I've stated before I need to research more about it and about what I want.

Semester 3 - Week 0

  This week I had my calc 2 and public speaking class, along with meeting with the TI Kathleen over at TGen. I have decided that I will be continuing my project on plant acoustics and starting a new one at TGEN. I don't have the full details on the TGEN project yet but I will once I have worked out the details on my schedule. It will be a very long and very busy semester but I am confident that I will be fine in the end. I wanna do as much as I can this semester so I have more experience to put on my resume for when I start applying for REU's soon.

Semester 3 - Week 5

  This past week I have been working on time management. Fortunately for this semester I only have 2 classes that assign homework and require outside studying: Physics and Calc 2. I had to switch to online for Calc 2 because I could not handle doing evening classes Monday through Thursday but I am now caught up on Calc 2. Physics will require more time, the math for physics isn't difficult because it's mostly applying algebra and precalculus concepts but putting together the equations and understanding the context is the real challenge.  My goal for this week is to update my current Google calendar (as shown above) and add set times for when I will study and when I will go to office hours for Physics. I used to study whenever I had the time or when I felt like it because I hated doing homework (especially math) when I felt tired or upset. Week 4

My mind has felt so scrambled for the past few weeks. It's my first semester as a student, Student Success Specialist, and Train scholar. Balancing all 3 whilst trying to have somewhat of a social life was difficult, to say the least. I wasn't sure what to do or who to ask. I wrote an email to Amanda, and Josh about quitting because I felt like I wasn't the right candidate anymore.   Amanda called me later that day, and it was intimidating at first because I assumed there'd be negative precautions for me. I was so paralyzed with fear and anxiety when I picked up the call. To my surprise, she was very understanding and didn't want to give up on me so easily. We had a long phone call discussing my frustrations and how I was approaching my problems. It felt nice talking through it all and being able to troubleshoot with someone else.  She said that I could quit if I really felt like that was the best decision.
