Semester 3 : Week 9

 

This week I had to do an informative speech for my public speaking class and I decided to explain my project since I had the sources already and could copy from my proposal. I was a bit nervous because it would be different compared to presenting for other TRAIN scholars. I still get nervous presenting at the end of the semester but the other scholars are at least somewhat familiar with machine learning. I think there are 3 people in my class who are majoring in a STEM field, so it was tricky to condense the information but not oversimplify it. 

I think I did well, I noticed some people who seemed genuinely interested so that made it easier. Even though this isn't a major-related class, I want to be able to explain my work to people who aren't in STEM. As well as improving my public speaking skills as I hope to present my work more in the future.

Semester 3 - Week 0

  This week I had my calc 2 and public speaking class, along with meeting with the TI Kathleen over at TGen. I have decided that I will be continuing my project on plant acoustics and starting a new one at TGEN. I don't have the full details on the TGEN project yet but I will once I have worked out the details on my schedule. It will be a very long and very busy semester but I am confident that I will be fine in the end. I wanna do as much as I can this semester so I have more experience to put on my resume for when I start applying for REU's soon.

Semester 3 - Week 5

  This past week I have been working on time management. Fortunately for this semester I only have 2 classes that assign homework and require outside studying: Physics and Calc 2. I had to switch to online for Calc 2 because I could not handle doing evening classes Monday through Thursday but I am now caught up on Calc 2. Physics will require more time, the math for physics isn't difficult because it's mostly applying algebra and precalculus concepts but putting together the equations and understanding the context is the real challenge.  My goal for this week is to update my current Google calendar (as shown above) and add set times for when I will study and when I will go to office hours for Physics. I used to study whenever I had the time or when I felt like it because I hated doing homework (especially math) when I felt tired or upset. I don't plan on forcing myself to work when I am not feeling well but I am going to do something about those feelings by taking a walk or...

Week 4

My mind has felt so scrambled for the past few weeks. It's my first semester as a student, Student Success Specialist, and Train scholar. Balancing all 3 whilst trying to have somewhat of a social life was difficult, to say the least. I wasn't sure what to do or who to ask. I wrote an email to Amanda, and Josh about quitting because I felt like I wasn't the right candidate anymore.   Amanda called me later that day, and it was intimidating at first because I assumed there'd be negative precautions for me. I was so paralyzed with fear and anxiety when I picked up the call. To my surprise, she was very understanding and didn't want to give up on me so easily. We had a long phone call discussing my frustrations and how I was approaching my problems. It felt nice talking through it all and being able to troubleshoot with someone else.  She said that I could quit if I really felt like that was the best decision.
