Semester 3 : Week 13

 


Two weeks ago, I attended the information session for the ASU West Train program. It was such a great informational session and I was admittedly intimidated at first and almost skipped attending it. Despite being less than two semesters away from transferring, it still feels like a huge step from being a community college student. 


I am very glad to have attended as it was a very welcoming event, I got to ask current scholars about their experience, as well as get advice from professors. One of the professors who has her degree in Applied Mathematics said she is so passionate about math as it is foundational for understanding life itself, which is the same philosophy that I share as well. Hearing her beliefs made me feel more comfortable about transferring and being a math major overall. 


During the session, I asked the professors what they would have done differently during their graduate school years slash what they wish they would have known beforehand. I was expecting answers related to financing graduate school or something along those lines but some of the professors said that they wished they would have enjoyed their time more or not harped so much on their academics. I was initially shocked to hear that this was one of their regrets but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I am very glad to have heard this bit of advice early on in my academic year because at times college isn't as fun when you've spent hours isolated to just study. It is critical to socialize and touch grass once in a while, so I hope I can have somewhat of a balance as I progress further in my studies.

Semester 3 - Week 0

  This week I had my calc 2 and public speaking class, along with meeting with the TI Kathleen over at TGen. I have decided that I will be continuing my project on plant acoustics and starting a new one at TGEN. I don't have the full details on the TGEN project yet but I will once I have worked out the details on my schedule. It will be a very long and very busy semester but I am confident that I will be fine in the end. I wanna do as much as I can this semester so I have more experience to put on my resume for when I start applying for REU's soon.

Semester 3 - Week 5

  This past week I have been working on time management. Fortunately for this semester I only have 2 classes that assign homework and require outside studying: Physics and Calc 2. I had to switch to online for Calc 2 because I could not handle doing evening classes Monday through Thursday but I am now caught up on Calc 2. Physics will require more time, the math for physics isn't difficult because it's mostly applying algebra and precalculus concepts but putting together the equations and understanding the context is the real challenge.  My goal for this week is to update my current Google calendar (as shown above) and add set times for when I will study and when I will go to office hours for Physics. I used to study whenever I had the time or when I felt like it because I hated doing homework (especially math) when I felt tired or upset. I don't plan on forcing myself to work when I am not feeling well but I am going to do something about those feelings by taking a walk or...

Week 4

My mind has felt so scrambled for the past few weeks. It's my first semester as a student, Student Success Specialist, and Train scholar. Balancing all 3 whilst trying to have somewhat of a social life was difficult, to say the least. I wasn't sure what to do or who to ask. I wrote an email to Amanda, and Josh about quitting because I felt like I wasn't the right candidate anymore.   Amanda called me later that day, and it was intimidating at first because I assumed there'd be negative precautions for me. I was so paralyzed with fear and anxiety when I picked up the call. To my surprise, she was very understanding and didn't want to give up on me so easily. We had a long phone call discussing my frustrations and how I was approaching my problems. It felt nice talking through it all and being able to troubleshoot with someone else.  She said that I could quit if I really felt like that was the best decision.
